Exploring the semantics of colour, shape and texture
Every ceramic object communicates. Through shape, colour, texture and composition, we create objects that are not only seen, but also perceived, interpreted and experienced. My workshops explore this visual language from a perceptual rather than symbolic perspective. Instead of starting from fixed meanings — such as red means love or the circle represents perfection — we investigate the qualities that make forms and colours feel different: rounded or angular, thick or thin, ordered or irregular, light or dark, warm or cool, muted or vivid.Through hands-on exercises, observation and comparison, participants explore how small changes in these parameters can alter the character, emotional impact and perceived meaning of an object. The aim is not to provide a set of rules, but to develop a more refined sensitivity and a practical framework for making more conscious choices. The workshops draw on empirical research into perception and emotional response, while remaining firmly grounded in experimentation and individual practice. They are suitable for ceramic artists, students and designers, as well as anyone interested in the expressive potential of colour and form. Each workshop approaches the subject from a different angle, but all share the same underlying question:How can we become more aware of what our formal and chromatic choices communicate — and use that awareness to strengthen our own visual language?Workshops can be organised for academies, art schools, ceramic centres, professional groups and other organisations. From time to time, I may also organise workshops independently, in which case registration will be available here.Interested in hosting a workshop?
