There is something unsettling about Tethered. Its angular shapes and heavy, compressed volumes may even seem awkward or ugly at first. Yet this discomfort is precisely what makes the sculpture so intriguing. The forms seem to be engaged in a struggle: a confrontation without resolution, a continuous effort that can never quite be won.
The slender elements resemble straps or handles. They suggest the possibility of grasping, handling and taking things into one’s own hands, while at the same time evoking the possibility of being grasped, handled or controlled by someone else. The work thus moves between the freedom to act and the experience of being acted upon.
The title Tethered refers to this state of being tied or constrained. It may evoke being bound by duty to act, compelled by obligations, expectations or forces that limit one's freedom while simultaneously demanding action. The dark palette of indigo blue, black and deep brown reinforces the weight of the shapes and the weariness of an action that cannot be escaped.
