Double Wall Sculpture
This double wall sculpture was created on commission, following conversations with the clients about their preferences for colour, texture, dimensions and theme. They wished to evoke water and the experience associated with the sea, its freshness, openness and sense of relaxation. The two panels are made from flax porcelain and are deliberately closely related. Only two parameters have been changed between them. The first is a formal parameter: one panel is horizontally orientated, while the other is vertical. All other formal qualities, such as roundness and fineness, remain essentially the same. The second is a colour parameter: the horizontal panel contains predominantly blues, while the vertical panel shifts towards greens. Both are animated by a yellow-ochre accent.
For each panel, a second variation was also produced, creating an additional pair in which the same two parameters could be observed in slightly different configurations.
The work is therefore more than a response to a commission. It is also an experiment in perception and meaning. By changing only two parameters, the two sculptures retain a strong formal connection while generating distinctly different associations. The meaning of the work is not fixed entirely within the object itself. It emerges through the interaction between shape, colour and the viewer's own perception and associations. In this sense, the two sculptures speak for themselves — while at the same time becoming complete through the experience of the person looking at them.
