Earth Fissure is a sculptural ceramic object composed of horizontal plates, divided by a central fissure. The abstract form evokes the cracks and openings in the earth that, in ancient myths, were imagined as liminal thresholds between the visible world of the living and the hidden, chthonic forces of the underworld.
The fissure suggests both a fragile boundary and a wound in the earth. Its red-edged opening intensifies this association while also recalling ancient springs and sacred openings through which the oracle could be consulted. The fissure can be filled with a small amount of water, bringing another dimension to the work and echoing the life-giving quality of natural springs.
Materials The wild clay was collected directly from the earth in the artist's garden and transformed with oxide washes and glazes before being fired in a wood kiln.
