Oval Dinner Plate #01, together with Rectangular Dinner Plate #01, is a study into the ideal form of a dinner plate. While the rectangular plate introduces a more pronounced sense of direction and angularity, the oval plate feels simpler and more familiar. Its softer, elongated form seems to adapt more naturally to everyday eating.

This simplicity raises a different question: does the shape of a plate influence what kind of food feels at home on it? While the rectangular form invites associations with particular dishes, the oval plate seems more suited to the food of everyday life: uncomplicated, familiar and varied.

The decorative pattern is inspired by Neolithic motifs found at archaeological sites around the Yellow River in China. In these early patterns, I am drawn to the search for essential forms: a visual language that emerges from a fundamental relationship between form, texture, and use.

The study reflects my broader interest in ancient cultures, particularly their earliest manifestations, and in the origins of forms that have remained part of everyday life. It also continues my longstanding attention to thoughtful design of ordinary objects: objects whose form is not merely decorative but can influence how they are held, used and experienced.
